Mandatory Equipment

Mouth guards, shin guards and eye guards and a field hockey stick are mandatory equipment.

  • Stick - Players will need an outdoor field hockey stick.  When buying a stick, make sure it is not an indoor stick, which is much thinner than an outdoor stick. Field hockey sticks range in length from 28"-38" so your daughter will have to be sized for the correct length stick.

(FYI, there are no left-handed field hockey sticks; all field hockey sticks are right-handed. No need to worry if your daughter is left-handed. The left hand is the control hand in field hockey stick skills and left-handed players often have the best hitting power.)
  • Eye Protection - There are two types of eye protection; cage-style and polycarbonate style.  Cage goggles are about $45 and polycarbonate are around $20-$25. The goggles need to meet the ASTM F2713-09 standard for field hockey. The ASTM F2713-09 compliance sticker will be on the goggle box. Please avoid any goggles that only meet the lacrosse ASTM standard. Some goggles meet both the field hockey and lacrosse ASTM standard so they are appropriate for field hockey.
  • Shin Guards -   When fitting shin guards, the top of the shin guard should stop right below the knee. Some soccer shin guards are appropriate for field hockey as long as they cover the entire shin.
  • Mouth Guards - Any mouth guard sold by a sporting goods retailer is acceptable.

Retailers - Shively Sporting Goods is the best resource for field hockey equipment.  Stick Head, Dick's Sporting Goods and Play It Again Sports carry all of the mandatory equipment as well.
